Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam Unveils "Erwin Olaf – Freedom" Retrospective
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is set to host a significant retrospective titled Erwin Olaf – Freedom, opening on October 11, 2025, and running until March 1, 2026. This exhibition marks the first major museum tribute to the Dutch photographer since his passing two years ago, celebrating his versatile artistry and exploring his extensive creative journey.
Visitors will experience a comprehensive overview of Erwin Olaf's oeuvre, which spans iconic artworks, lesser-known pieces, videos, and sculptures. The presentation also includes his commercial photography and personal archive materials, culminating with his final, unfinished video work.
Exploring Erwin Olaf's Vision of Freedom
Erwin Olaf Springveld (1959-2023) gained international recognition as one of the Netherlands' most influential photographic artists, known for his distinctive staging, precise lighting, and often provocative subjects. A fervent advocate for personal freedom, Olaf consistently championed identity, sexuality, gender, diverse human forms, nightlife, and equal rights. This activism is a recurring motif throughout the exhibition, which is structured thematically while loosely following his chronological development.
The exhibition begins with Olaf’s early journalistic, candid black-and-white reportages from the 1980s, documenting social issues such as gay rights demonstrations. It then transitions to his move towards staged studio photography, highlighting his pursuit of greater control over composition. Featured series include Ladies Hats (1985-2022), Chessmen (1987-88), Royal Blood (2000), Grief (2007), Fashion Victims (2000), Berlin (2012), and Skin Deep (2015), alongside commissioned works like SM in Holland (1989) and pieces for the Dutch National Ballet.
Olaf's series consistently advocate for diversity and the freedom to express oneself, with themes like 'party' often symbolizing resistance to intolerance. The exhibition also delves into darker explorations, such as the men in Paradise (2001) or campaigns for the Aidsfonds and COC, the world's first LGBTQ+ organization. Recent works like Im Wald (2020), April Fool (2020), Palm Springs (2018), and Shanghai (2017) engage with contemporary social themes, showcasing his refined style and contemplative approach. The series Muses (2023), exploring the transience of life, will be publicly displayed for the first time.
The exhibition concludes with Olaf’s unfinished video work, posthumously titled For Life. This piece, featuring vases with flowers—a recurring motif in his work symbolizing the transience of life—was started after his lung transplant and cut short by his unexpected death.

Additionally, a celebratory party at Paradiso on Sunday, February 1, 2026, will be inspired by the popular thé dansants Olaf once organized.
