Sijmons, a co-founder of H+N+S Landschapsarchitecten, critically examines the design world's relationship with its own worldviews, questioning whether we are still operating under modernist ideals. His lecture connects the life in the Anthropocene with the design world, presenting four philosophical approaches to this era: Denialism, Ecomodernism, Posthumanism, and New Anthropocentrism, all of which can be seen as routes away from modernism. Sijmons will outline the significant challenges humanity faces as our species has become a geological force disrupting global systems, including climate change, biogeochemical cycles, water cycles, and biodiversity loss. The lecture addresses the evident crash of the globalized economy against its planetary boundaries and explores how the design world can utilize new navigational tools to address these critical issues.
