Curatorial context

This bike tour, taking place during Queer History Month, invites participants to explore Amsterdam's built environment through the lens of queer architecture. Led by a queer architect, the tour investigates how architecture can express personal identity and contribute to societal inclusivity. Amsterdam, known for its open culture, provides a rich context to examine how members of the LGBTQIA+ community live and shape their surroundings. The tour will explore specific architectural examples, such as the L.A. Ries House for elderly LGBTQ+ residents, Block 0 Superlofts designed for resident adaptation, and De Roze Hallen, a community housing project for LGBTQIA+ seniors. The tour also touches upon the broader context of inclusive urban planning, contrasting traditional housing models designed for nuclear families with the diverse living needs of child-free couples, single households, and the LGBTQIA+ community. It raises questions about whether standard housing types provide sufficient space and freedom for diverse lifestyles, particularly in a competitive housing market, and how innovative, flexible designs can accommodate different needs and foster more inclusive living environments.

Admission and ticket notes

The bike tour costs €29.50 and requires participants to bring their own bicycle. A free lecture titled 'Honeys! I’m Home: Designing living spaces beyond the heteronormative family model' will precede the tour, starting at 12:30pm; registration is required for the lecture. The tour introduction begins at 1:30pm, with the tour itself starting at 2:00pm from Arcam, Prins Hendrikkade 600, Amsterdam. The tour is conducted in English.
