The 'BOOM Landscape: Architect in Residence #1 of 2019' program highlights the critical role of Amsterdam's green wedges, featuring the work of Philomene van der Vliet and Jan Maas. This initiative aims to bring the importance of these landscapes to the public's attention, advocating for a 'Scheggen-Deltaplan' (Green Wedge Delta Plan) to support climate goals, CO2 reduction, and sustainable urban development. The project addresses challenges such as high maintenance costs, peat oxidation, subsidence, and land speculation, proposing that by enhancing the intrinsic value of these landscapes for climate objectives, Amsterdam can achieve a win-win scenario of urban densification with a healthy, livable, and sustainable environment.
As part of the initiative, a large-scale model created by four design firms will be exhibited at Architectuurcentrum Amsterdam, accompanied by compelling visuals. The perspectives gathered from this research will be compiled into a manifesto to be presented to regional authorities. The program emphasizes the beauty and function of an active landscape where production, ecology, and recreation merge with climate adaptation and CO2 buffering. The residency showcases the vision of BOOM Landscape, which focuses on contemporary urban landscapes, emphasizing local characteristics, the tension between public and private, and the transition from landscape to city.
