Curatorial context
For years, Arcam has been collecting descriptions of new architectural projects in its online Architecture Guide, compiled by experts with architectural-historical and architectural descriptions of buildings in Amsterdam. In 2021, Arcam recognized the importance of the social context and personal stories surrounding the built environment. 'De Subjectieve Atlas van Amsterdam' (The Subjective Atlas of Amsterdam) aims to shift the focus from expert knowledge to a diverse collection of stories, acknowledging the varied personal experiences of Amsterdam's residents and users.
The project has involved numerous workshops with different groups, including young residents and status holders at Startblok Elzenhagen, the LGBTQIA+ heritage organization IHLIA, students from the Sandberg Institute, the art collective We Sell Reality, and Radio Voorwaarts. These workshops explored subjective visions of Amsterdam, gentrification, social-economic polarization, hidden queer history, and the experiences of international students and refugees. A kick-off weekend was held in October 2021, and a publication was launched on March 26, 2021. The project is financially supported by the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie.
