This exhibition showcases the work of Dérive, a research bureau focusing on architecture, public space, and urban strategy, as part of ARCAM's 'Architects in Residence' program. The project explores universal design and accessibility, culminating in a winning proposal for a new permanent exhibition setup for ARCAM.
As part of ARCAM's 2023 theme 'Architecture for Everyone,' which focuses on increasing awareness and interest in accessibility within the built environment, the exhibition 'Dérive: Architects in Residence #2 of 2023' highlights the work of the research bureau Dérive. Following in the footsteps of previous residents, Dérive, comprising Hedwig van der Linden, Kevin Westerveld, and Margot De Caster, was unanimously selected from an Open Call to develop a new permanent exhibition setup for ARCAM. Their approach is rooted in the concept of 'dérive,' a method to map the emotionally experienced situations of places and how different visitors interact with them.
Dérive's winning design aims to optimize accessibility around ARCAM's premises and entrance, as well as enhance the connection between the building's floors. Their proposal includes movable cabinets at various heights and a wall-space-cabinet unit linking the ground and first floors. The jury praised the design's comprehensive and thoughtful nature, its provision for extensive exhibition possibilities, and its ability to serve visitors, exhibition creators, and the building itself effectively. The project also investigates making the public space surrounding ARCAM more accessible, inspired by the 'Subjective Atlas of Amsterdam.'
