Een Optimistisch Rampenplan: Designing for a World in Transition Exhibition at Arcam

This exhibition investigates the limits of the green economy and the imagination needed to design a safer future. It explores how designers can contribute to addressing critical global issues like social inequality, climate change, and biodiversity loss, presenting their work and research from the Noordzeekanaalgebied.

Arcam presents 'Een Optimistisch Rampenplan – Ontwerpen voor een wereld in transitie,' an exhibition that confronts the urgent reality of planetary crises and the imaginative capacity required to design a more secure future. Scientists have long warned about the threats to Earth's vital systems, and the exhibition delves into the growing global awareness that fundamental choices are necessary to maintain a habitable planet. It questions what individuals and systems can truly achieve when global systems often operate on their own financial and economic logic. The exhibition features three design teams – Taller Architects (circular economy), BOOM Landscape (PFAS), and New Environments (sacrifice zones) – who, guided by philosopher Lisa Doeland and landscape architect Dirk Sijmons, explore their roles in their immediate environments. Through animations, detailed models of the Noordzeekanaalgebied, and conceptual elements like a broken piñata-shaped globe, the exhibition visualizes the complexities of resource allocation, environmental pollution, and global trade impacts. Visitors can also engage with the 'Nazorgruimte' (Aftercare Room), a 'Groene Kliniek' concept by theatre group Gouden Haas, offering personalized 'recipes' for coping with the emotional impact of the climate crisis, emphasizing recognition and shared understanding rather than easy solutions.
