This exhibition showcases visionary, unbuilt architectural plans proposed over the past 25 years for Amsterdam's Kop van Java island. Visitors can explore designs for office towers, hotels, bridges, and even eco-cathedrals, and decide for themselves if any of these world-class plans could have been realized.
The Kop van Java is a unique location in Amsterdam offering exceptional views of the IJ, with a political decision to keep it free of development unless an absolutely world-class plan emerges. This exhibition, held during the Month of Architecture 2023, presents striking plans that have been launched over the last quarter-century. These include proposals for office towers, megahotels, bridges, eco-cathedrals, and even statues of liberty, inviting visitors to judge whether any of these winning plans could have been implemented. The exhibition also references past projects, such as the 'Vrijheidsbeeld Amsterdam' designs by 45 students from the Academy of Architecture in 2017, including Elena Staskute's 'Equilibrium'. A committee, led by Maarten Kloos, reviewed plans for the Kop Java from 2008 to 2022.
