Curatorial context
The Fietsenstalling Stationsplein, designed by wUrck Architectuur, stedenbouw, landschap & infrastructuur, is a significant infrastructural project completed in 2022 for the Gemeente Amsterdam. Situated more than nine meters below ground level, it is Amsterdam's largest bicycle parking garage, capable of holding 6,300 bicycles and 700 OV-fietsen, with a total of over 10,000 new parking spaces created around the Central Station. The design emphasizes the relationship with water, drawing inspiration from an oyster with a rough entrance transitioning into a smooth, bright interior. Three travellators bridge the nine-meter depth from the Prins Hendrikkade to the garage, separated by a pedestrian staircase. The central management area and bicycle service point are positioned as the 'pearl' within the oyster design. The 'colonnade', a wide main path, guides users from the reception area through the garage to the metro hall entrance, providing a dry and sheltered route. Decorative elements include a series of maps illustrating Amsterdam's development along one wall and sgraffiti by artist Lex Hoorn near the metro entrance, creating a unique underwater world.
The project is part of the 'De Entree' initiative to renew the central side of Amsterdam Central Station. wUrck was responsible for the design of the entire Entree, including low quays, bridges, and jetties, and acted as supervisor for all architectural components. The Fietsenstalling Stationsplein is notable for being the first bicycle parking garage in the world built entirely underwater. Its design intentionally mirrors the materiality of the quay wall to integrate with the surroundings. The structure is supported by 131 droplet columns, with the colonnade leading to the metro entrance characterized by oculi lighting fixtures. The garage was nominated for an Architecture Prize in 2023 and is publicly accessible.
