Exhibition summary

This exhibition showcases five new construction projects in Amsterdam's Nieuw-West, Noord, and Zuidoost districts, highlighting designs developed collaboratively with local residents. It explores innovative architectural approaches to community housing and urban development.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Hervertellingen – Bouwen met de buurt' (Retellings – Building with the Neighborhood) delves into five new construction projects located in Amsterdam's Nieuw-West, Noord, and Zuidoost districts. These projects exemplify a collaborative approach, where design and construction are undertaken not just for, but crucially *with*, the local community. Featured projects include the Wooncoöperatie De Bundel and the Wildemanbuurt (Nieuw-West), Renovatie Geldershoofd & Gravestein and Beheercoöperatie Vreeswijkpad (Zuidoost), and SAMPLE (Noord). With Amsterdam facing a significant housing construction and existing building renovation challenge by 2050, this exhibition addresses the common occurrence of resident protests in these very districts. ARCAM's year program, 'Hervertellingen,' seeks design methods where architects can genuinely serve users and residents, aiming to improve stalled participation processes. By weaving together architectural history (the built city), social history (living experiences and housing protests), and the lived stories of the city (oral history), the exhibition aims to foster a new dialogue between residents, designers, and clients. It draws from previous discussions and meetings that explored the potential of such collaborative practices.
