Discover Queer Ways of Living: New Family Structures and Inclusive Housing Design in Amsterdam

On Saturday, March 7, 2026, Arcam will host a lecture by architecture researcher Anastasia Cubasova titled "Honeys! I’m Home: New Family Structures, New Homes: Queer Ways of Living." Cubasova, whose work focuses on spatial justice, queer domesticity, and participatory design, will discuss her research on how housing can better support queer and pluriparental family structures. Her master's thesis examines the spatial barriers in current housing policies and design standards, which often assume the heterosexual nuclear family as the norm, and explores how architecture can foster shared care, collective living, and non-normative kinship. The project, stemming from fieldwork, co-housing precedents, and participatory design workshops with LGBTQ+ families, identifies spatial challenges and articulates the needs of contemporary LGBTQ+ domestic life. The outcome is a speculative 20-unit cooperative designed within existing social housing regulations, proposing subtle yet feasible architectural adaptations. The research argues that inclusive housing is a matter of spatial justice, care infrastructures, and the right to live collectively while thriving in queer identity.
