Exhibition summary

Mijn Stad (My City) is a four-year research program by ARCAM exploring what matters to Amsterdam residents and how their stories can shape the city's future. It connects personal urban experiences with knowledge of the built environment through public activities and independent advice.

Curatorial context

Mijn Stad is a four-year research program by Arcam that investigates what resonates with Amsterdam residents and how their stories can inform the city's future. The initiative bridges personal urban experiences with expertise on the built environment, employing public activities like city tours and offering independent advice. This approach fosters a richer, more human-centered perspective on Amsterdam. The program builds on the 'Subjectieve Atlas van Amsterdam' (2023), which documented 80 personal city experiences through maps, providing valuable insights for those working towards a just, accessible, healthy, and affordable city. Within 'Mijn Stad,' Arcam deepens this approach, addresses current urban themes, and brings experiences to life by exploring the city. The program includes 'Mijn Stad Tours,' guided walks and bike rides led by 'city storytellers'—Amsterdam residents with unique perspectives on their neighborhoods. These tours reveal the city's history, architecture, policy, and daily life, prompting discussions on green spaces, housing, migration, accessibility, and self-determination. A new series of tours is planned for April 2026. Additionally, 'Mijn Stad Adviezen' develops proposals based on the experiences of city storytellers and experts. The first advice, 'Groen Doen' (Green Action), was published in December 2025, followed by an advice on the physical accessibility of Amsterdam in March 2026. Arcam also established an Advisory Council in 2025 to guide these efforts.
