Curatorial context

The 'Mijn Stad Tours: Stad zonder papieren – verhalen uit Bajesdorp' (City Without Papers – Stories from Bajesdorp) is an English-language guided bicycle tour taking place on Saturday, April 11, 2026. It aims to shed light on the experiences of undocumented Amsterdammers, who are often excluded from basic provisions and public discourse. The tour highlights how these individuals create space within the city, often against the grain of policy and public perception. It focuses on Bajesdorp, a space on the former Bijlmerbajes site that serves as a café and art space (GROND) where makers with and without papers meet for encounters, debates, and experimentation. The tour is led by social designers and activists Elke and Teferi, who are involved with 'We Sell Reality' and 'We Are Here,' organizations advocating for the rights of undocumented refugees. They share personal stories about their past as squatters, the negative stereotyping of refugees, and new forms of collaboration. Participants will explore the architecture and public space of Amsterdam from a different perspective, discovering how these areas become places where space is continually found for those who do not fit standard patterns.
