Curatorial context
Modelstad Haven-Stad presents a vision for the future of Amsterdam through a permanent, evolving multimedia installation and model, focusing on the development of Haven-Stad, the city's largest inner-city expansion. This exhibition acts as a workshop, inviting visitors to explore and shape the city of tomorrow by examining how crucial urban elements like housing, work, mobility, sustainability, and climate adaptation converge in this vast new area. The core of the exhibition is a large-scale model, supported by six detailed sub-area models (scale 1:1000), that visualize the spatial challenges and opportunities within Haven-Stad, which is planned to accommodate 40,000 to 70,000 homes. It delves into complex issues such as combining high-density living and working with water management and energy, integrating industrial heritage, and developing new public transport hubs, all while addressing climate adaptation.
The installation is designed as a living urban laboratory and a platform for dialogue, evolving over the coming years with new insights and plans. It encourages active participation from architects, policymakers, residents, and interested citizens to co-create the future urban environment. Through its 'Myquette' component, it explores how user knowledge can inform the design process, while 'Transitionscape Haven-Stad' aims to enhance dialogue between designers, clients, and politicians for more informed decision-making. Modelstad Haven-Stad is more than a display; it is a dynamic workspace where urban imagination meets reality, fostering a collective contemplation of Amsterdam's future.
