Curatorial context

The 'My City Tours: Baaibuurt-West – Stories of a Disappeared Neighborhood' tour delves into a fascinating chapter of Amsterdam's urban development. Baaibuurt-West began as an organically grown neighborhood from the 1960s, characterized by vibrant communities of residents, craftspeople, and artists, developing independently of formal city planning. This area, often described as the last "rough edge" of Amsterdam, has largely been demolished since 2025 to accommodate pre-planned, top-down urban development projects that did not accommodate dissenting voices. Led by city storytellers Marijn van der Eyden and Jana Bickert, former residents and active members of the Baaibuurt Collective, this tour uses photographs to convey the personal stories and lived experiences of the neighborhood. Visitors will start from the Zuiderzeeweg bus stop and explore the remains of this unique area, questioning whether the emotional significance of Baaibuurt-West can inform future architecture and urban planning in Amsterdam. The tour aims to foster conversations about the city's future by examining the collision of past, community, and development.

Tickets cost €7.50 and include admission to Arcam. Free tickets can also be reserved. The tour lasts 1.5 hours and meets at the Zuiderzeeweg bus stop. For questions, contact Sjaan van der Tol at [email protected].
