Exhibition summary

This event addresses the urgent need for climate-conscious renovation and demolition practices in Europe's housing crisis. It features a film screening, lecture, and panel discussion to promote systemic change and build a Dutch network for sustainable renovation.

Curatorial context

Architecture contributes significantly to global CO₂ emissions, prompting a re-evaluation of demolition and renovation practices amid climate and housing crises. This public event, hosted by ACAN NL, AvBK, and IABR as part of HouseEurope!, aims to highlight the movement advocating for EU legislation that prioritizes renovation. Through a film screening, lecture, and panel discussion, the event seeks to foster dialogue on systemic change, architectural responsibility, and the development of a robust Dutch network dedicated to climate-conscious renovation. It questions whether the Netherlands can play a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable European future through renovation initiatives. HouseEurope! advocates for incentivizing renovation to become the standard practice in Europe, thereby stimulating the renovation market and valuing existing structures. The initiative aims to preserve homes and communities, support a fairer and more local building industry, conserve energy and resources, and maintain cultural heritage and stories. The movement contends that demolishing existing buildings is an outdated practice, comparable to other unsustainable trends, and seeks to establish renovation as the norm to mitigate environmental impact and preserve value.

Admission and ticket notes

Admission is free with registration. The event will take place at Pakhuis de Zwijger, which is wheelchair accessible. Further accessibility details and contact information for assistance are provided.
