Curatorial context
Amsterdam is a city in perpetual flux, where urban landscapes are continuously reshaped, ports redefine their functions, and new communities emerge at the city's edges. The exhibition 'Traces of a City in Motion' brings together photographers Herman Wouters, Karlijn van Diepen, and Wouter Zaalberg to document these layers of change. Through their respective lenses, they capture not only the physical transformation of the built environment but also the social dimensions of those living within it.
Herman Wouters focuses on the 'in-between' spaces of the city, documenting the temporal nature of monuments and everyday structures. Karlijn van Diepen turns her attention to the fringes, such as Nieuw-West and Weesp, highlighting the connection between residents and their evolving environments. Meanwhile, Wouter Zaalberg’s project 'A Better Port' examines the Port of Amsterdam’s transition away from fossil fuels, capturing the resilience and shifting character of this major industrial area. Together, these bodies of work invite visitors to consider the city as a living, breathing entity.
