Curatorial context
The Urban Sky Lab is a research initiative by ARCAM and the Amsterdam Drone Lab that examines the profound impact of drone technology on the future of urban environments. With the rapid advancement of drones, potential applications range from delivery services and emergency response to personal transportation, suggesting a significant transformation of cityscapes within the next three years. The project convenes selected architects for a two-day design sprint to address this near-future urban challenge, aiming to generate design strategies that integrate drone technology into the city. The outcomes of this sprint will form the basis for discussions on architecture's role in a drone-integrated urban fabric.
Three specific case study areas in Amsterdam were selected for detailed exploration: the Westelijk Havengebied (Western Port Area) as a logistical hub, Amsterdam Zuidoost (around Amsterdamse Poort and Johan Cruijff Arena) focusing on social and small-scale integration, and the RAI Amsterdam area, considering commercial and civil services alongside living and working environments. These studies explore the design of necessary infrastructure, such as drone landing pads and corridors, and the impact of drones on residents, businesses, and emergency services, considering issues of safety, noise, and visual pollution in densely populated centers.
