Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores speculative designs for integrating drones into the urban fabric, focusing on spatial planning for the airspace. It showcases concepts for drone operations in areas like Westelijk Havengebied, Amsterdam Zuidoost, and the RAI, highlighting the opportunities and possibilities of unmanned aviation in cities.

Curatorial context

With the increasing presence of drones in urban settings, 'Urban Sky Lab – Ontwerpen voor drones in de stad' delves into the crucial topic of airspace spatial planning. The exhibition features speculative designs from architects and urban planners who have considered the integration of drones in three distinct locations: the Westelijk Havengebied, Amsterdam Zuidoost, and the RAI conference center. Visitors will gain insight into the potential and challenges of unmanned aerial vehicles in the city, from package delivery and medical supply transport to surveillance and even personal transport. The project investigates where drones should fly, land, and recharge, envisioning drone highways and assessing the potential social value of drone networks at the neighborhood level. This exploration is vital as developers and investors increasingly seek specific guidelines for buildings related to drone usage, a domain where policy and urban planning are still developing. Three architectural firms—FABRICations, Studio To Create, and INBO—have developed distinct design proposals for these urban scenarios. FABRICations focused on the Westelijk Havengebied, Studio To Create on Amsterdam Zuidoost, and INBO on the RAI. The exhibition presents these results, offering a forward-looking perspective on how drones can become an integral part of the urban environment. The project is a collaboration between Arcam and the Amsterdam Drone Lab, aiming to inform the spatial and socio-economic implementation of unmanned aviation in cities, acknowledging that much depends on technical development and that current policy focuses heavily on public acceptance, legislation, and safety.
