Curatorial context

Arcam presents 'Zomerwandeling Centrumeiland,' a guided architectural walk exploring a neighborhood in full transformation. This tour is part of the 'De Nieuwe Stad op Zondag' series, which highlights areas undergoing significant change. Centrumeiland is slated to become home to 1,500 to 1,700 residences, with a notable emphasis on self-build projects, aiming for a character that prioritizes green spaces and sustainable living. The neighborhood incorporates advanced systems like heat-cold storage for climate control and 'rainproof' designs to manage rainwater effectively. The walk will showcase the diverse range of housing typologies emerging from the self-build initiatives. Featured projects include 'Wooncoöperatie De Warren,' the first self-build housing cooperative in the Netherlands, constructed primarily from recycled wood, and 'Juf Nienke,' which utilizes wooden modules and allocates some units specifically to teachers. These examples highlight the varied and innovative architectural approaches shaping Centrumeiland into a unique urban environment.
