Curatorial context
The Zomerwandeling Houthaven is part of Arcam's 'De Nieuwe Stad op Zondag' series, which offers architectural tours of neighborhoods undergoing significant transformation. This particular walk delves into the Houthaven area, a historical hub for timber storage that has been actively redeveloped since 2010. Seven car-free artificial islands have been created, each expressing a distinct character through its building style, with street names and bridges referencing the area's past. The development aims to create 2,700 homes, with over 1,800 already completed, emphasizing climate neutrality through solar energy and recycled paving materials.
The area features a varied range of housing, commercial spaces, and recreational facilities. Notable projects include Domūs, offering 235 rental apartments focused on communal amenities, and Lariks, providing 102 youth homes. The architecture often reflects a modern interpretation of the Amsterdam School style. The tour is led by an expert, providing insights into the ongoing construction, recreation, and residential life within this evolving urban landscape.
