These summer walks offer a unique opportunity to experience the GWL-terrein, Amsterdam's first eco-neighborhood, located in the Staatsliedenbuurt. Conceived after the Gemeentewaterleidingen vacated the site in 1989, the area was transformed into a green, park-like environment with a high density of housing. The winning urban design by Kees Christiaanse (KCAP) guided the development, involving a selection of emerging architects like Liesbeth van der Pol (Dok Architecten) and Neutelings Riedijk, who created a lively and varied district unified by its consistent use of brick. During the tours, participants will see how industrial heritage coexists with the housing built in the late 1990s. Key sites include Café Restaurant Amsterdam, the iconic watertoren, and the distinctive zigzag houses designed by Dok Architecten. These walks complement the exhibition 'Van Maquette tot Metropool: Stadsuitleg Amsterdam 1986–2026' and provide insight into the evolution of urban planning and residential design in Amsterdam.
