Foam presents 'Mid-Air', a retrospective exploring over 25 years of playful and provocative image-making by Dutch artist duo Blommers & Schumm. The exhibition showcases highlights from their career, known for blurring the lines between fashion photography and autonomous art.
This exhibition, 'Mid-Air', offers a deep dive into the archives of Dutch artist duo Blommers & Schumm, celebrating over 25 years of their distinctive image-making. Anuschka Blommers and Niels Schumm, who met at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, have become leading figures in international fashion photography since graduating in 1997. Their work is known for meticulously composed scenes that capture moments which could never unfold so serenely in reality, such as a falling glass or a constructed face from disparate objects. They achieve these seemingly impossible constructions entirely in-camera, capturing them only for the brief moment the photograph is taken.
The exhibition brings together iconic photographs featured in prominent publications like Fantastic Man, The Gentlewoman, Dazed & Confused, and The New York Times Magazine. Blommers & Schumm have developed a unique visual language that is both conceptually rich and visually striking. By challenging fashion photography conventions and embracing the unexpected, their work encourages viewers to reconsider their perceptions. This retrospective provides a rare glimpse into their evolving world, where precision meets playfulness and appearances are often deceiving. Please note: Part of the exhibition contains visuals that may trigger seizures in viewers with photosensitive epilepsy; viewer discretion is advised.
