This online exhibition, part of the Kısmet project, showcases the work of four emerging image-makers from Turkey born after 1990. It delves into Turkish visual culture through photography, highlighting diverse personal investments and translations of inner worlds by artists Oğulcan Arslan, Alp Peker, Kıvılcım S. Güngörün, and Cansu Yıldıran.
As part of the multi-year Kısmet project, inspired by ties between Turkey and the Netherlands, this online exhibition offers a snapshot of contemporary Turkish image-makers. It features four artists—Oğulcan Arslan, Alp Peker, Kıvılcım S. Güngörün, and Cansu Yıldıran—all born after 1990, whose voices are poised to shape the future visual landscape. While their styles vary, a common thread is their profound personal investment and deep connection to their perception of the world, revealing distinct translations of their inner lives through methodology, subject matter, and aesthetics.
Oğulcan Arslan's series 'All the Rivers Flow in the Nuthouse' intimately captures a friendship and reflects on mental health care through adjusted light, exposure, and composition. Alp Peker uses photography as a manifesto, with 'Amel Defteri: a Notebook of Deeds' voicing protests against social taboos and injustices using ordinary objects. Kıvılcım S. Güngörün's 'I Lab Yu' comprises autobiographical fiction in the form of digital collages, translating intuitive visual responses to questions and inner workings. Lastly, Cansu Yıldıran's 'The Dispossessed' investigates power dynamics and gender inequality in their ancestral village, drawing inspiration from the personal stories of local women to explore identity and belonging.
