Kochetova's work challenges viewers to reflect on memory, survival, and the profound meaning of home in times of ongoing war.
Julia Kochetova, a Ukrainian photographer and documentary filmmaker based in Kyiv, presents her solo exhibition 'War is Personal' at Foam. As part of a new generation of image-makers documenting the war in Ukraine firsthand, Kochetova brings a unique and intimate perspective. A journalism alumna from Taras Shevchenko National University and Mohyla School of Journalism, she has contributed to major media outlets and earned an Emmy Award in 2023, along with recognition from World Press Photo in 2024.
While traditional international media often reduce war to mere statistics, Kochetova intentionally shifts her lens to the deeply personal lives behind these figures. Her photographs make the emotional realities of conflict palpable, focusing on the resilience of individuals, their homes, and their language amidst ongoing strife. The exhibition's title, 'War is Personal,' underscores Kochetova’s core belief that true understanding of war comes not from a distance, but by acknowledging that every story is tied to a name, a face, and a lived experience.
