Exhibition summary

Het Wonderkamer Toneel is a project by artist Arne Hendriks and designer Josef Zappe that explores the future of the Dutch landscape. Using six miniature stage theaters inspired by historical ones, the project presents varying visions of the landscape through weekly dialogues with invited Dutch artists, designers, and architects.

Curatorial context

Launched by artist Arne Hendriks and designer Josef Zappe, 'Het Wonderkamer Toneel' (The Wonder Chamber Theatre) investigates the evolving Dutch landscape. The project centers around six meticulously crafted miniature theaters, inspired by historical stage designs from the 1762-1829 collection of Hieronymus Baron van Slingelandt at the Allard Pierson Museum. Each theater features a designed facade and a mechanical backstage system that allows for the creation and performance of various new landscape scenes. Over six weeks, Hendriks invites a different Dutch artist, designer, or (landscape) architect each week to shape and present their vision for the future landscape. These presentations are discussed in public conversations, leading to a diverse range of future perspectives. The project culminates on the final day with a comprehensive performance and presentation that brings together all the insights and scenes developed throughout the exhibition. The project also highlights the tension between the formal 'makeability' of urban planning and the informal, spontaneous activities that shape the landscape.
