This exhibition celebrates Monk's influential interdisciplinary performance practice, translating her live performances and concerts into encounters with immersive video and sound installations within the 700-year-old church.
Meredith Monk, a composer, singer, director, and choreographer, has pushed the boundaries of vocal music for over five decades with her unique approach to the voice. The exhibition offers an overview of her diverse oeuvre, featuring installations of famous music theatres like 'Quarry' (1976) and 'ATLAS' (1991), the pioneering video installation '16 Millimeter Earrings' (1966/1998), and the sound installation 'Silver Lake with Dolmen Music' (1981). It also includes an Amsterdam version of her interactive artwork 'American Archaeology' (1998), where the public supplements the work with new objects dipped in beeswax. Integral to the exhibition are live concerts scheduled throughout its duration, connecting Monk’s legacy to the Oude Kerk and passing it on to new generations of musicians.

Meredith Monk (b. 1942, New York City) is a composer, singer, director/choreographer, and creator of new opera, music-theatre works, films, and installations. She is recognized as a pioneer of 'extended vocal technique' and 'interdisciplinary performance'. The exhibition is a co-presentation of the Oude Kerk Amsterdam and Hartwig Art Foundation, curated by Beatrix Ruf, director Hartwig Art Foundation, in close collaboration with Meredith Monk and The House Foundation for the Arts.
