Open Atelier: Subjective Atlas of Amsterdam – An Exhibition Exploring Urban Perspectives

This exhibition showcases the 'Subjective Atlas of Amsterdam,' a project that collects place-specific perspectives from diverse Amsterdam inhabitants, focusing on underrepresented voices. Visitors are invited to explore these unique contributions and map their own perspectives of the city.

The Open Atelier: Subjective Atlas of Amsterdam exhibition delves into the creation and content of the 'Subjective Atlas of Amsterdam.' This project challenges the objectivity of traditional maps by highlighting the layered social, political, and cultural realities of the city through the eyes of its inhabitants. The atlas comprises a diverse collection of individual experiences, recorded during working sessions with partner organizations, aiming to broaden and diversify the architectural debate by moving the conversation about the city beyond an exclusive domain of experts. Visitors are encouraged to follow the process, draw inspiration from the various contributions and other subjective atlases, and ultimately map out their own unique perspective of Amsterdam. The Open Atelier provides an interactive space on the first floor of Arcam for this exploration. The project was developed in cooperation with Subjective Editions (Annelys de Vet and Kurt Vanbelleghem), founders of the concept, and graphic design support by Wouter Stroet. The initiative is financially supported by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and in partnership with Ymere. The exhibition aims to foster a more inclusive architectural discourse by embracing and amplifying the myriad subjective experiences that shape the understanding and perception of Amsterdam.
