Curatorial context

For the third consecutive year, the Oude Kerk partners with Dekmantel to present the festival's official opening concert. This year's performance features Space Afrika, the Manchester-based duo comprising Joshua Inyang and Joshua Reid. Their music, deeply influenced by ambient, dub, trip-hop, and Detroit techno, draws inspiration from the industrial landscapes of North West England and concepts of travel, decay, and emotional release, conveyed through sound, visuals, and performance. Following their earlier works like Somewhere Decent To Live (2018) and the mixtape hybtwibt? (2020), Space Afrika released their highly acclaimed album Honest Labour in 2021. This work, which explores themes of British identity, love, and loss, garnered significant recognition, including RA's Album of the Year and Bandcamp's Best Ambient Album, solidifying their status as a distinctive act in contemporary electronic music. Dekmantel Festival, a leading Amsterdam-based electronic music event renowned for its forward-thinking programming, runs from July 30 to August 3, 2026.
