This bicycle tour explores the role of mobility, particularly the automobile, in the design of Amsterdam's Nieuw-West district. Participants will cycle past roads, bridges, and buildings envisioned for the future city, examining how Cornelis van Eesteren's design accommodated increasing traffic and how modern insights are shaping current mobility.
This bicycle tour, part of the Van Eesteren Museum's 'Mobility' theme for 2026, delves into the significance of (auto)mobility in the design of Nieuw-West. Participants will cycle through the district, observing the roads, bridges, and buildings constructed with the vision of a future city in mind. The tour examines how Cornelis van Eesteren's design successfully accommodated anticipated traffic growth, and how later developments, like the A10 West ring road, altered these original plans. Visitors will experience the design of modernist, free-standing roads and viaducts, noting where planned infrastructure was never realized and where the realized infrastructure expanded beyond original foresight. The tour encourages reflection on the historical vision of urban mobility and how current insights are reshaping it.
Tickets for this bicycle tour must be purchased in advance through the website. The tour starts and ends at the Van Eesteren Museum pavilion.
