Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the prodigious visual dimension of Spanish musical theatre in the late 1920s, a period of extraordinary scenic developments. It recreates a world of color, perspective, and luminosity, drawing from archival materials related to composer Jacinto Guerrero and the era's visual arts.

Curatorial context

In the late 1920s, the Spanish musical scene achieved a remarkable visual prowess, coinciding with artistic avant-garde movements and technical innovations. Theatre became a box of surprises with extraordinary scenic developments, notably in works like 'El sobre verde' (1927), a blend of popular sainete and theatrical artifact, and 'La orgía dorada' (1928), a milestone of the modern grande spectacle revista with vibrant colors and lighting that rivaled Parisian stagings. In contrast, zarzuelas like 'El huésped del Sevillano' (1926) and 'La rosa del azafrán' (1930) were staged with strict realism, reflecting historical and rural Spanish settings. These diverse yet complementary worlds characterized an Spain progressing with an open mind and restless spirit. The exhibition, 'Artificios Teatrales', reconstructs this world of color, perspective, and luminosity, as much of its memory survives only in sketches and a few photographs. The documents displayed primarily come from the Archivo Guerrero, dedicated to preserving the memory of composer Jacinto Guerrero, the Archivo ABC, and the Colección ABC, an essential reference for illustration and drawing of the period. Guerrero composed all the works featured in the exhibition, and his presence is evident through a gallery of portraits and caricatures that helped disseminate the image of a fundamental figure in Spanish musical theatre of the first half of the 20th century.
