Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Gesto y la Expresión' presents a collection of works created by students from the Higher Degree in Illustration at Escuela de Arte Diez, Madrid. Developed within the framework of the Artistic Drawing subject, the exhibition delves into the theme of 'Gesture and Expression' with the fundamental aim of sensitizing students to new forms of contemporary expression and fostering the development of their own unique language. The artworks prioritize gestural strokes as a means to represent expressions and gestures, seeking to highlight the artist's personal imprint and the emotional, subjective aspects through playful experimentation with visual elements. This use of gesture and line, intentionally distorting form, accentuates the expressive charge of the images while aiding identification. The intensity of the gesture varies across a wide range of registers, from fragile and brittle to dynamic and energetic. Color is also employed to enhance the subjective expression of the images, and textures, often applied with free and experimental use of materials, contribute a primary, tactile perceptual level. In the development of these works, students studied diverse contemporary movements and authors such as Primitivists, Expressionists, Minimalists, Automatists, and Zen Calligraphy to enrich the didactic proposal and inform their personal artistic research. The exhibition was organized by Consuelo Cousido Martínez-Conde, a professor at Escuela de Arte Número Diez, with mounting by second-year Illustration students from the 2013-2014 academic year, and design by Pedro José de Arriba González. The illustration for the cover was created by Celeste Sánchez Demare.
