LADYLIKE. Disciplinamiento, belleza y violencia is an exhibition by artist Elo Vega, exploring the representation of the female body through classical sculpture and contemporary imagery. It delves into themes of obsession, dreams, and fears surrounding women, framed by feminist critical concepts like the 'male gaze'.
The Museo Nacional de Escultura presents the temporary exhibition LADYLIKE. Disciplinamiento, belleza y violencia. This exhibition centers on a series of works by artist Elo Vega, stemming from her research into the relationship between classical statuary and other images from art history and daily life. Vega's creations serve as a visual essay on the representation of the female body across various ancient sculptural models and works from fields such as advertising, art, journalism, and literature. The common thread uniting these seemingly disparate works is the obsessions, dreams, fantasies, and fears that impact women. Feminist criticism has termed this complex of emotions and behaviors 'the male gaze,' referring to the sexualized representation of women as objects for heterosexual male consumption.
LADYLIKE continues an exhibition dynamic initiated by the Museo in 2011 with 'Figuras de la exclusión' and continued in 2017 with 'Nada temas, dice ella,' demonstrating a firm commitment to gender equality in art and society. This exhibition marks the conclusion of a cycle where contemporary art has interacted with the Museum's historical works, alongside pieces by Eduardo Chillida and Juan Haro, reinforcing a critical re-reading of art history to give women the space they deserve.
