International Seminar on Lusitania: Unpacking the Roman Province's Western Territorial Integration Research

This international seminar, held on December 13-14, 2019, served as a forum to debate and share ongoing research related to the Roman province of Lusitania. It brought together studies on its integration as a western territory, focusing on aspects such as infrastructure, monumentalization, and rural development.

The International Seminar "Lusitania. Vertebración del nuevo territorio occidental" was held on December 13 and 14, 2019, serving as a crucial forum for discussion and the sharing of numerous ongoing, often unpublished, research projects concerning the Roman province of Lusitania. For decades, the Foundation of Roman Studies and the National Museum of Roman Art (MNAR) have collaborated on programs focusing on Augusta Emerita's position within Lusitania, leading to extensive research lines. These include studies on Roman forums, monumentalization, Roman Augusta Emerita as a model, communication routes, engineering works, Lusitanian plastic arts, rural territories, society, and production methods. In 2018, the MNAR further deepened its involvement by joining the Ammaia Project through an international archaeology program. This seminar aimed to highlight Lusitania's growing importance and improved understanding, emphasizing its role as a key part of the western Roman territory.
