Curatorial context
The 'Vestido Madrid de los Austrias' is a standout piece by renowned designer Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada, created in 2003 for the exhibition 'Doce trajes para Madrid'. This particular dress is crafted from hand-colored shantung-effect silk in shades of green and yellow, with a cotton lining. It features a knee-length, fitted bodice with a rounded neckline and Japanese long sleeves, a sharply defined waist, and a wide, rigid bell-shaped skirt reminiscent of a 'guardainfante'. A striking decorative element is the appliquéd crescent moon made of yellow silk and rayon taffeta. The dress, which closes with a back zipper, was donated by the author to the Museo del Traje in 2005. The inspiration for the dress came from the Habsburg period of Madrid, and Ruiz de la Prada intentionally designed it as a 'menina' dress, referencing Velázquez's iconic portraits. The designer expressed her admiration for 'menina' dresses, suggesting they should be worn more often. The crescent moon motif is a recurring element in Ruiz de la Prada's work, appearing in previous designs such as 'Vestido Luna' (1994) and another moon-shaped dress in 1997. The text also delves into the relationship between fashion and art, noting Ruiz de la Prada's collaborations with artists like Enrique Vega and Pep Guerrero, and her ability to translate painted fabrics into 'wearable objects'. Her career is detailed, from her birth in Madrid in 1960 to her international success and her distinctive style characterized by 'happy clothes' and an unconventional approach to the female form.
