Brain(s): An Exhibition Exploring Art, Science, and the Nature of Intelligence

The exhibition 'Brain(s)' delves into how art, science, and philosophy have historically represented the brain, exploring its anatomy, consciousness, creativity, and other generated phenomena. It also examines non-human intelligence and organisms without brains.

The exhibition ‘Brain(s)’ undertakes a profound exploration of the human brain, arguably the most complex object known, and the myriad questions it provokes regarding existence, consciousness, creativity, and the nature of intelligence. Throughout history, art, science, and philosophy have grappled with understanding this fascinating organ, and this exhibition brings together diverse perspectives to illuminate its representation and the phenomena it generates, including abstract thought, language, imagination, dreams, and memory. Beyond the human mind, ‘Brain(s)’ extends its inquiry to other forms of intelligence, considering artificial, animal, and collective intelligence, as well as organisms that lack a brain. The exhibition features approximately 300 pieces, ranging from contemporary immersive art installations by artists such as Tomás Saraceno, Ivana Franke, Greg Dunn, and Joan Foncuberta, to historical materials from pioneers like Santiago Ramon y Cajal and René Descartes, alongside inventions by visionary scientists and significant research projects. Co-produced by Fundación Telefónica, the Wellcome Collection, and CCCB, it is curated by physicist and biologist Ricard Solé and Emily Sargent, curator at the Wellcome Collection.
