Curatorial context
‘Cerebro(s)’ en San Telmo offers a comprehensive exploration of the brain and conscious experience, questioning our understanding of this fascinating organ. The exhibition brings together nearly 150 pieces, comprising scientific projects, historical collections, and works by contemporary artists such as Alex Guevara, Ivana Franke, Joan Fontcuberta, Greg Dunn, and Xavi Bou.
Organized by San Telmo Museoa in collaboration with the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), Fundación Telefónica, and Wellcome Collection, the exhibition is co-curated by physicist and biologist Ricard Solé and Emily Sargent, director of exhibitions at Wellcome Collection. It is divided into three sections: 'Materia,' which examines the study of skulls and cave art, the emergence of symbolic thought, and the historical connection between the brain and technology; 'Mente,' exploring the brain and consciousness as processes where memory plays a fundamental role; and 'Otras mentes,' which investigates cognitive agents beyond humans, including simple cells, collective intelligences, artificial intelligence, and biological robots.
Originally stemming from two independent exhibitions, ‘Brains: The Mind as Matter’ (2012) and ‘States of Mind: Tracing the Edges of Consciousness’ (2016) at Wellcome Collection in London, this iteration at San Telmo Museoa in San Sebastián offers a new synthesis of these themes.
