Curatorial context
The exhibition 'Cerebro(s)' investigates the human brain, arguably the most complex object known, and the profound scientific and philosophical questions it poses. It examines how art, science, and philosophy have depicted this fascinating organ throughout history, exploring not only its anatomy but also the emergent phenomena it creates: consciousness, abstract thought, language, imagination, dreams, and memory. The show also extends its gaze to other forms of intelligence, including artificial, animal, and collective intelligences, as well as organisms that lack a brain.
With approximately two hundred works on display, including installations by over twenty contemporary artists and nearly twenty scientific research projects, 'Cerebro(s)' challenges our understanding of conscious experience and contemplates what occurs when this experience is disrupted or altered. The exhibition is curated by physicist and biologist Ricard Solé and Emily Sargent, curator at Wellcome Collection. It features works from artists like Tomás Saraceno, Ivana Franke, Greg Dunn, and Joan Foncuberta, alongside historical materials from Santiago Ramon y Cajal and René Descartes, and contributions from leading research institutes. This exhibition is a coproduction between Fundación Telefónica, Wellcome Collection (London), and CCCB (Barcelona).
