Curatorial context
‘Color. El conocimiento de lo invisible’ (Color: The Knowledge of the Invisible) is an exhibition presented by Fundación Telefónica Movistar Ecuador in collaboration with the Centro Cultural Metropolitano and the Embassy of Spain in Ecuador. It probes the fundamental question: 'What are colors and how are they created?' Throughout history, color has been recognized as a dynamic phenomenon encompassing physics, technology, culture, and psychosocial evolution. While an optical parameter, its effects, though paradoxically illusory, form a crucial part of our cultural identity. Scientific, industrial, and technological advancements continuously expand the chromatic range of our world, offering new understandings of this phenomenon beyond our immediate visual perception.
The exhibition draws from a rich collection of works, objects, and archival documents from institutions such as the Museo Astronómico, Ministerio de Cultura y Patrimonio, Museo Jacinto Jijón y Caamaño, Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Fundación Estuardo Maldonado, Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, and Universidad Católica del Ecuador. It also showcases art by notable Ecuadorian artists including Olga Fisch, Miguel Varea, Araceli Gilbert, Manuel de Samaniego, Estuardo Maldonado, Johana Alarcón, Pilar Flores, Juan Carlos León, Oswaldo Viteri, and Jaime Andrade. Curated by María Santoyo and Miguel A. Delgado, the exhibition navigates the diverse facets of understanding and relating to color. It investigates color from scientific perspectives, exploring cutting-edge research, as well as its economic, social, cultural, and artistic implications. The exhibition narrative unites artists, creators, researchers, and technologists, past and present, illustrating how color not only defines our world but also reveals the subtle truths that remain invisible.
