Curatorial context

Espacio Fundación Telefónica presents 'Joanie Lemercier. Lightscapes', the artist's first solo exhibition in Spain, offering a comprehensive look at his creative universe through seven audiovisual installations. Joanie Lemercier, a pioneer in video mapping and co-founder of the AntiVJ collective, uses projected light and computer programming to create immersive experiences that alter visual perception and question our understanding of reality. The exhibition is curated by Juliette Bibasse and focuses on the importance of nature in Lemercier's work, reflecting on its representation through technology. The exhibition is divided into two parts: the first part immerses viewers in captivating, abstract digitally "manufactured" environments, including evocative volcanoes and imaginary geographies born from human-machine collaboration. The second part shifts to reveal the stark reality of nature's scars from human overexploitation, confronting visitors with the urgency of environmental safeguarding through colossal drone-captured images. Three new creations are featured: 'Edges', a hand-drawn landscape of Mount Fuji enhanced by projected light; 'The Hambach Forest and the Technological Sublime', depicting the deforestation of an ancient forest; and 'Desirable Futures', an interactive space for contemplation. Other exhibited works include 'Eyjafjallajökull' and 'Fuji' from his volcano series, 'Montagne, cent quatorze mille polygones' showcasing a distorted grid mesh landscape, and 'Paysages Possibles', where a plotter draws a unique universe of mountains.
