Curatorial context
This exhibition delves into the groundbreaking contributions of seven visionary women who revolutionized modern dance in the 20th century. It features Isadora Duncan, Loïe Fuller, Joséphine Baker, Tórtola Valencia, Mary Wigman, Martha Graham, and Doris Humphrey, highlighting their collective efforts to establish new modes of artistic expression and liberate the female form from the constraints of conventional ballet and societal norms. The exhibition showcases how these artists broke taboos, experimented with new aesthetics, and laid the foundations for contemporary dance through their innovative choreography, stagecraft, and revolutionary lifestyles.
The project is structured into seven experiential spaces, each dedicated to one of the featured figures. From Duncan's pioneering spirit and her inspiration from nature and Greek art, to Fuller's scientific exploration of light in her performances, Baker's electrifying stage presence, Valencia's exoticism, Wigman's connection to German Expressionism, Graham's development of a unique expressive language based on contraction and release, and Humphrey's emphasis on gravity and natural movement. Through traditional museographical resources and immersive audiovisual installations, the exhibition aims to reinterpret the legacy of these artists and position early 20th-century dance as a critical new art form.
