Fundación Telefónica inaugurates the Módulo II of the Cárcel Vieja in Murcia with 'Materia interior,' a major exhibition by acclaimed international artist Jaume Plensa. This exhibition marks the commencement of a new cultural programming initiative for the historic venue, aiming to position Murcia within the global contemporary art circuit. The show features fifteen sculptural works by Plensa, created from the 1990s to the present, offering an in-depth look into the conceptual universe of a leading figure in contemporary sculpture. Previously shown at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Madrid, where it attracted over 330,000 visitors, 'Materia interior' delves into themes such as identity, silence, listening, and the inner dimension of the individual through a language that merges body, word, and space.
The exhibition is not intended as a retrospective but rather offers an intensive reading of the conceptual lines that define Plensa's artistic trajectory. It focuses on the interplay between the spectator, the space, and the artwork itself. The architecture of the Módulo II of the Cárcel Vieja is designed to create a dialogue with Plensa's sculptures, articulating the exhibition experience through volume, void, and proportion. This new phase at the Cárcel Vieja will feature a stable programming model with two artists per year and long-term exhibitions, fostering deeper engagement with art. The initiative will also include related activities such as expert talks, publications, educational programs, and collaborations with academic institutions to create a comprehensive cultural ecosystem for research, dissemination, and contemporary creation. Fundación Telefónica reaffirms its commitment to contemporary art dissemination and exhibition itinerancy with this project.
