Curatorial context
The exhibition 'Nasca. Buscando huellas en el desierto' (Nazca. Searching for Footprints in the Desert) narrates the history of the people who populated the Río Grande de Nazca basin approximately two thousand years ago. It presents a journey through one of the most fascinating and enigmatic cultures of ancient Peru, featuring pieces of great relevance and informative digital resources.
Developed between approximately 200 BCE and 650 CE on Peru's southern coast, the Nazca culture is renowned for its striking ceramics, fine textiles, and the immense geoglyphs etched into the desert plains. This exhibition, organized by the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI) and the Museum Rietberg, Zürich, in cooperation with Fundación Telefónica, offers a unique opportunity to examine this enigmatic culture up close. It is curated by Cecilia Pardo, deputy director of MALI, and Peter Fux, curator at the Museum Rietberg. The exhibition is structured around five key areas: 'Life and Valley,' which highlights Nazca's naturalistic and supernatural motifs; 'Cahuachi,' the culture's most important early center; 'Mythology and Ritualism,' exploring their belief systems; 'The Sacred Landscape,' focusing on the Nazca and Palpa pampas and the geoglyphs; and 'How Were the Geoglyphs Made?', detailing the creation process through contrast and manual labor. Innovative technological tools, including mapping, virtual reality, and animations, enhance the visitor experience with a museography focused on digital dissemination.
