Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Norman Foster. Futuros comunes' aims to bring the architect's work and his vision of the future to a broad audience, while also showcasing his sources of inspiration. The exhibition focuses on the continuities in Foster's work, demonstrating how the future and the past can inspire the present. Since his early works over half a century ago, Norman Foster's architecture has sought to use technical knowledge to anticipate the future and overcome physical or social barriers. Drawing inspiration from historical constructions and scientific advancements, his projects reconcile tradition and modernity, urban intelligence and transformative capacity, aesthetic excellence and technological innovation. Coinciding with the public presentation of his foundation in Madrid, the Norman Foster Foundation, this exhibition—curated by Luis Fernández-Galiano—documents twelve recent projects that dialogue with twelve proposals from earlier decades, underscoring the continuity of his concerns and the variety of his interests. From interventions in heritage buildings to projects for lunar habitats, Foster's work draws on the memory of the past and anticipates future needs while remaining firmly rooted in present demands. His proposals for new spaces for work and culture, healthcare for cancer patients, underserved populations, and sustainable urban developments, stimulate efforts to make our cities more livable, all under the banner of social sensitivity, openness to change, and innovation. The exhibition is housed in Espacio Fundación Telefónica, a building that was itself a model of innovation, the first skyscraper built in Spain, whose structure is highlighted by the exhibition's design. The central area features a collection of flying artifacts, from gliders to space capsules, serving as inspiration for these lightweight architectures and emblems of a rapidly changing world.
