Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Villa Diodati gathering where Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was conceived, this exhibition traces the evolution of science fiction themes such as robotics, genetics, and artificial intelligence. It examines the literary roots of the 'mad scientist' trope and the ethical debates surrounding the pursuit of knowledge, drawing inspiration from classic works by authors like Shelley, Stevenson, Wells, Hoffmann, and Villiers de L’Isle Adam. The exhibition is divided into three thematic blocks: 'The Monster' (Frankenstein, The Island of Doctor Moreau), 'The Double' (The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Invisible Man), and 'The Robot' (The Sandman, The Future Eve). It analyzes the iconographic representation of monsters and mad scientists in popular culture and features original pieces from various collections. Curated by Miguel A. Delgado and María Santoyo, the exhibition investigates the cultural and literary background of these enduring themes. It explores how early scientific advancements in chemistry and electricity influenced literature, leading to iconic figures and cautionary tales about human ambition and the consequences of playing God. The exhibition also touches upon the historical context of scientific practices like vivisection and the literary exploration of the darker aspects of human nature and identity through the concept of the doppelgänger and artificial beings.

The exhibition is located at Espacio Fundación Telefónica, C/ Fuencarral, 3, Madrid. Visiting hours are Monday to Thursday and Friday from 10:00 to 20:00, and Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 11:00 to 20:00. An option to add the event to a calendar is provided.
