Curatorial context

The Great Imagination. Histories from the Future' is an exhibition that delves into how societies throughout history have envisioned the future, and how these past conceptions continue to influence our present. Curated by Jorge Camacho, the exhibition proposes a reflection on tomorrow, aiming to understand the genesis of past future concepts and their ongoing impact. It questions how our idea of the future has evolved and the role of imagination and creativity in shaping potential futures. The exhibition traces a journey through a universe of fictions and daydreams that have evoked what a future time could be like, drawing from literature, film, comics, design, and architecture. It presents projects ranging from early utopias to contemporary speculations, highlighting the imaginary futures that emerged from the Industrial Revolution onwards. By weaving a dialogue between imaginaries from the 18th century to the present day, the show investigates how our current vision of the future remains anchored in past ideas and values, and critically assesses whether speculating about idealized futures is still valid in the face of contemporary crises. It emphasizes the necessity of unleashing the transformative power of imagination to conceive "radically different" worlds.
