Curatorial context

The Espacio Fundación Telefónica hosted Nobel Prize in Literature 2021 winner Abdulrazak Gurnah for a discussion about his latest novel, "Un largo camino." Gurnah, accompanied by journalist Montserrat Domínguez, presented the book, which is his first written after receiving the Nobel Prize. The novel is described as a luminous and deeply human story that masterfully portrays an era of intense global change. Set in Zanzibar in the nineties, "Un largo camino" intertwines the lives of three young individuals – Karim, Fauzia, and Badar – as they navigate their early adulthood in a post-colonial East Africa. The narrative explores their dreams, aspirations, and struggles against the backdrop of a changing world. Karim returns to his hometown with renewed ambitions, Fauzia seeks escape from an oppressive education, and Badar, an orphan with limited prospects, finds a sense of belonging and friendship. Their bond is tested as they face love, work, and parenthood, creating a subtle yet powerful family drama filled with authentic characters and profound humanity.
