Curatorial context
The exhibition "Virxilio Vieitez" served as a comprehensive retrospective of the Galician photographer's oeuvre, encompassing both his renowned works and previously unpublished material. Coproduced by Fundación Telefónica and MARCO de Vigo, the show featured over 250 photographs in color and black and white, resulting from extensive research by curator Enrica Viganó. The selection reviewed more than 50,000 negatives dated between 1953 and 1980 from the photographer's personal archive. The exhibition revealed Vieitez's distinctive perspective, characterized by a unique ability to imbue everyday scenes with a profound, solemn, and intense quality. While many portraits featured static poses and direct gazes, the exhibition also uncovered more intimate and dynamic snapshots of distended moments, capturing village life, celebrations, and the passage of time. Original studio materials, including vintage prints, cameras, and personal items, were also displayed, alongside a screening of the documentary "Virxilio Vieitez. Beyond the profession."
