Exhibition summary

This exhibition, the first dedicated to Ad Reinhardt in Spain, explored his role as a forerunner of minimalism and conceptual art. It was divided into two sections: one focusing on his plastic work and the other on his extensive writings and contributions as a teacher and critic.

Curatorial context

Considered one of the forerunners of minimalism and conceptual art, Ad Reinhardt's work and writings have significantly influenced subsequent artistic movements. This retrospective, the most comprehensive in Europe to date, was divided into two thematic sections, faithfully adhering to Reinhardt's own emphatic statement on the nature of art: "Art Is Art and Everything Else Is Everything Else." The first section, "Art is art...", was dedicated exclusively to Reinhardt's plastic work, charting a unique trajectory within 20th-century abstraction that moved towards a radical renunciation of external references. The second section, "...and everything else is everything else", presented a wealth of documentary material highlighting his multifaceted career as an educator, illustrator, essayist, and author of critical texts and cartoons on art history, artists, and art institutions. The exhibition brought together a total of 118 works, including 47 paintings and drawings, alongside 71 books, magazines, pamphlets, and other documentary materials, in collaboration with the Ad Reinhardt Foundation and with support from the Terra Foundation for American Art.
