Exhibition summary

This exhibition at the Juan March Institute reinterprets the entire work of Robert Rauschenberg as a photographic practice. It explores his innovative use of images through collage, serigraphy, and his own photography, highlighting key moments from the 1950s to 1999.

Curatorial context

Coinciding with the centenary of his birth and supported by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, this exhibition at the Juan March Institute revisits the influential artist. The exhibition frames Rauschenberg's extensive oeuvre as an essentially photographic practice. Rauschenberg began using a camera in the 1950s under the guidance of Hazel Larsen and Aaron Siskind. In his iconic Combines, he incorporated news clippings into canvases through collage, and from 1962, he used serigraphy to transfer images directly onto canvas in his Silkscreen paintings. Initially employing published press photographs, Rauschenberg began working primarily with his own snapshots from 1983 onwards. This appropriation of images was groundbreaking, marked by significant artistic technique development and an approach based on a lack of hierarchy, akin to his concept of 'random order.' The exhibition focuses on key phases of his career centered on this use of imagery, starting with photographs from his time at Black Mountain College in the 1950s and concluding with the autobiographically tinged series 'Ruminations' from 1999.
